The Learning Mission
The learning mission opportunity has had a dramatic effect on Mass Info Tech GED students - directly and indirectly. It is
preperation that differenciates a learning mission from a field trip. Students will have had at least two weeks of in-class lectures, group projects, readings, and quizes relevent to the Learning Mission destination. Participation on a learning mission is contingent upon attendance, behavior, and in class performance. The learning missions are well coordinated with the destination facility, students have worksheets that must be completed during the external learning opportunity and after each Learning Mission will complete a debriefing activity such as writing a paper or taking a quiz.
If judged from an upper class or middle class perspective, it is too easy to underestimate the benifits of the learning mission. Consider that many GED students and their families have very limited access to a car, have traveled little, few have been on a plane, and most could not provide directions to common destinations such as Boston or Providence. Adults of every age, will do what is familar to them over and over again, most will avoid change agressively. The Learning Mission - among other things - expands familiarity. As familiarity expands, so does aspiration. With aspiration growth is inevitable.

The Learning Missions occur twice per month at each school on Friday's.
