Hardanger is Norway’s orchard, and the name makes Norwegians think about blossom and fruit trees. Hardanger is located on the Western coast of Norway, West of the large mountain plateau Hardangervidda. Two of the largest glaciers in Norway are located in Hardanger, and the waterfalls go from the glaciers and mountains towards the queen of the fjords, the Hardangerfjord. Hardanger has a rich heritage and part of this heritage is the national costumes. The star under the neck is inspired by a piece of the female costume. You can find the star in many variations, embroidered, woven or in pearls. You can also find the star on the socks for men and on the apron and shirt for women. The rectangular fields on the chest and at the bottom are inspired by the embroidery on the buttonholes of the male jackets. The large squares on the chest are supposed to reflect the cherry blossom that has made Hardanger famous. Between the squares are snow covered mountains reflected in the crystal clear Hardangerfjord.
